The Requirements

The needs generated from the stakeholders drove a set of requirements that could be used to design a successful system. Each need was assigned an appropriate metric and an ideal value as well as an acceptable value range. The ideal value was determined by conducting research into quantitative needs and determining the appropriate values. For example, all nutritional requirements were calculated using the current nutrient intakes for NASA ISS missions that last under 360 days. Other values were arbitrarily chosen as a way to stress the feasibility of the more qualitative needs.

The acceptable value ranges were generally taken to be ±10% of the ideal value where applicable. In some cases this resulting range was deemed inappropriate and adjusted appropriately.
